چکیده

According to IEEE 802.11 protocol, beacon frames are periodically transmitted by the Access Point (AP) and carry mostly network specific information. All the wireless stations (or wireless clients) with in the "vicinity" of transmission range of AP receive corresponding beacon and use the information embedded in it for various purposes. The arrangement of information in beacon is standardized by 802.11, thus facilitating communication between different devices manufactured by different vendors. Also, the IEEE 802.11-2007 is the base protocol and its several amendments have been published by IEEE till date. In this paper we show that with out breaching the standard, where additional nonstandard information can be embedded on the transmitted fields of 802.11 beacon frame. This facilitates the nonstandard, vendor/network specific communication of information from AP to wireless clients without Association.

Bit-Stuffing in 802.11 Beacon Frame: Embedding Non-Standard Custom Information

In an infrastructure Basic Service Set (BSS) beacon frames are transmitted periodically by the Access Point (AP) and announce the presence of a wireless network. It mainly consists of network specific information and thus one of its main purposes is the "advertisement" of this information. Based on this information mobile devices can take many decisions, for example, whether to attempt associat...

An Enhanced Power Save Mode for IEEE 802.11 Station in Ad Hoc Networks

The IEEE 802.11 standard requires that a beacon station has to stay in awake after generating a beacon frame to serve probe request. This requirement make a reason to consume valuable power of beacon station even though there are no frame exchanges between stations or there exists only one station in the ad hoc network. This paper proposes an ePSM(Enhanced Power Save Mode) to reduce effectively...

Throughput Analysis of the IEEE 802.11 Power Save Mode in Single Hop Ad hoc Networks

In the IEEE 802.11 Power Save Mode (PSM) specified for Independent Basic Service Set (IBSS), time is divided into beacon intervals. At the beginning of each beacon interval, each station in the power save mode periodically wakes up for a duration called announcement traffic indication message (ATIM) window. The stations that have successfully transmitted ATIM frame within the ATIM window will c...

Modified Power save Model for Better Energy Efficiency and Reduced Packet Latency

Devices constituting wireless ad-hoc networks generally operate in battery power, energy efficiency is a critical research issue. IEEE 802.11 Power Save Mode is a standard recommended for energy efficient operation of wireless ad-hoc networks. When there is no data to transfer, energy is still utilized by IEEE 802.11 PSM during the ATIM window. With this work, an attempt is made to address this...
